Sussex Playwrights' Club 2012 Stage Play Competition.

This year's competition is for a 90 minute stage play on the theme of Past, Present and / or Future

First Prize: £200 plus a reading of the play at a Club Meeting.

Second Prize: £100 plus a reading of the play at a Club Meeting.

Third Prize: £ 50 plus a reading of the play at a Club Meeting.

# The play should last 90 minutes 

# The play should have no more than 6 characters

# Entry fee is £7 (with one free entry for Sussex Playwrights' Club members)

Rules

The competition is open to any author, regardless of nationality or country of residence and must be an original play, written in English and not previously broadcast, produced before a paying audience or read at a club meeting.

Plays, which must be clearly typed and securely bound, should be sent to Mr Nicholas Quirke, 24 Highcroft Villas, Brighton, East Sussex, BN1 5PS to arrive no later than the 31st July 2012.

Entries via the internet and email address will not be accepted

All plays must be entered under a pseudonym and all entries should include a sealed envelope with the play's title and the pseudonym on the cover. This envelope should contain a card with the author's real name and address and email address if appropriate, plus sufficient postage for return of the manuscript if required.

Sussex Playwrights' Club members are entitled to one free entry but all other entries must be accompanied by the entry fee of £7. Receipt of entries will not be acknowledged. It is hoped that the results will be announced by Mid-December 2012.

The decision of the judges is final and we cannot enter into any correspondence concerning the results. The judges reserve the right not to award a prize if the number or standard of the entries is deemed to be insufficient.

Winning Authors must agree to their plays being given a reading at a club meeting

New Venture Theatre / Sussex Playwrights Club 10-Minute Play Competition - 2012

Rules of Entry

General

1.    All plays submitted must be a maximum of 10 minutes in length. They should also not be shorter than 5 minutes.
2.    Plays must be written for the stage and may have no more than 3 characters in total - this includes non-speaking and off stage interacting characters.
3.    Plays should have minimal set and props.
4.    Plays must be the original work of the submitting writer (which excludes adaptations). Plays may not be submitted by an agent or on behalf of the writer.
5.    Plays must not have been performed or published. Plays that have received a rehearsed reading as part of their development are acceptable.
6.    Plays must be received by the deadline of 31 January 2012. Any submissions received after this date will not be considered in the competition.
7.    Submission of a play is taken as the granting of a rights licence to produce the play, at no cost, as part of the competition - see competition prize section.
8.    All submissions must be accompanied by the appropriate competition entry fee - see submission section.
9.    Writers may submit a maximum of 3 plays.
10.    Plays must be written in English.

Submissions

11.Plays should be submitted to: 10-Minute Play Competition, New Venture Theatre, Bedford Place, Brighton, BN1 2PT. No electronic submissions will be accepted.
12.    Two hard copies of each play must be submitted.
13.    Plays should be on A4 paper, professionally set out, double spaced and attached by a single staple in the top left hand corner only. No binders or other fixings please.
14.    All plays must have a title page on which is the play title and writer's pseudonym
15.    The writer should submit a sealed envelope containing their contact details, name of the play and a brief biography. The outside of the envelope should be clearly marked with the play title and their pseudonym only.
16.    Each submission must be accompanied by a payment of £5 entry fee for the competition.
17.    We are unable to return your scripts so please do not send the original copy.
18.    If you wish to receive confirmation of receipt enclose a stamped addressed postcard - please use your pseudonym on this postcard.

Competition Prize

19.    All submissions will be read by our judging panel and a shortlist of 6 to 8 will be selected.
20.    Details of the plays selected for production will be published on the New Venture Theatre and Sussex Playwrights websites and their writers will be advised during May 2012.
21.    These plays will be produced at the New Venture Theatre in the 60 seat Studio theatre for 7 performances during the week 14 to 21 July 2012.
22.    After each performance the audience will be asked to vote on the plays they have seen.
23.    On the last night the winning play will be announced from the audience votes.
24.    The winning writers will be invited to attend the final performance on Saturday 21 July - due to the size of the theatre we can only provide them 1 complimentary ticket each.
25.    A video recording will be made of one performance and a copy will be sent to each of the participating writers.
26.    The organisers reserve the right to change any of the above in the event of problems beyond their control that may cause the performances to be detrimental to the reputation of the writers and / or organisations.

Notification of winners will be sent by post in the New Year along with prizes and scripts.
