Terence Rattigan was one of the most acclaimed playwrights and screenwriters of
his generation. His fall from critical favour marked a turning point in modern British theatre.
Terence Rattigan wore a carefully constructed mask of respectable, suave gentility in order to conceal his true nature. But who was the man behind the mask? Who was the real Terence Rattigan?
The Art of Concealment is a play not only about the demons that haunted one of our great playwrights but about the creative process itself, and the process of ageing, of loss, and the pain of love – with the ironic twist that we know Rattigan to be more honoured now than he would ever have expected in his lifetime.
The play was specially commissioned for the Brighton Festival Fringe 2011 to mark the Rattigan centenary year.
Some press comments on the Brighton production:
“It’s a pleasure in the perennially snack-sized Fringe to gnaw on such a meaty, thoughtful play.… All in all, it’s worth dedicating an evening to this multi-faceted work - which explores so much, yet highlights how some human truths will remain forever concealed.” Richard Stamp (Fringe Guru)
“A very fine play indeed, and full of exceptional performances.”
Michael Hootman (Gscene Magazine)
“Fine biodrama by Giles Cole about the playwright Terence Rattigan. It explores his early success, the homosexuality he concealed, and his sad and sometimes bitter later years when his work was eclipsed by the Royal Court revolution.”
